Currently made up of nine dedicated members who serve as Firefighters and Emergency Medical Responders, the Spider Lake Fire Department (SLFD) protects life, health, and property for the full-time and seasonal residents – as well as thousands of annual visitors - of the Town. It operates under the guidance of the Town’s Health & Safety Committee.
Drivers, Emergency Medical Responders and Fire Fighting personnel are always needed. Come check us out at our monthly Business meeting the 1st Thursday of every month at 6:00pm at the Town Hall and/or our Training night which is the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at Station #1 by the Town Hall. You can also email [email protected] for further information.
Responding to calls covering everything from structural and wildland fires (including brush fires), to downed power lines, to gas/carbon monoxide alarms, to medical emergencies, to vehicle and hunting accidents, the SLFD responded to more than 30 fire-related calls and more than 35 medically related calls in 2020 alone.
The SLFD also assists in Ice and Water Rescue, Wild Land Search and Rescue, and cleanup after natural “disasters” such as large wind events. Augmenting its response capability, the SLFD participates in “mutual aid” agreements with twelve other all-volunteer fire departments in the surrounding area, and with the Wisconsin DNR and the US Forest Service. These entities rely on the SLFD – and the SLFD on them – to assist each other in providing emergency response for TOSL and surrounding areas.

Meetings & Training
Monthly meetings (open to the public) are held at the town hall on the first Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
Training is conducted on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Location varies.
In April 2021 The Town Emergency Communications Tower was activated allowing the Road and Fire Department radios consistent, quality communication capability almost anywhere within the Town of Spider Lake. This project has been discussed for at least 10 years but in August 2020, Jim Nickel volunteered to manage the project. Jim negotiated the necessary contracts and brought the project to completion in 8 months, reducing costs and risks along the way. This was a team effort. Don Fogal, Bob Hamlin, Lee Nelson, Deb Amery, Sue Dale, and Tim Sheldon were key players from the Town and the following organizations played key roles:
1. Associated Public Safety Communications Officers - Frequency coordination
2. Federal Communications Commission - Construction permit and operating license
3. Edge Consulting - Structural analysis
4. Norvado - Cell site lease and outdoor cabinet, lunar pad and ice bridge
5. DSC Communications - Reprogramming and system installation
6. Motorola - Repeater and duplexer equipment
7. Kreyer Electric - AC wiring
8. Jump River Electric - Electric power
9. Structural Tower Services - Antenna and line installation
